Torticollis

A while back I wrote about Megan and her neck exercises. We have done what we can for her, but despite our efforts her neck remains twisted. At her six month well check the pediatrician referred us to a specialist. The specialist spent quite sometime examining Meg. She was simply amazed that for her severity of torticollis that her head was not severely misshapen. That being said, Megan's head is not exactly the shape it should be. There is only one time in her life when this can be repaired and the time is now. So, to another specialist we went--this time for scans and to be fitted for a cranial molding helmet.
Torticollis and misshapen heads are kind of like chickens and eggs--it is really hard to say which came first. But, a molding helmet will help with her neck as well as reform the shape of her head. We have also started physical therapy with Megan. She is not a fan, but we can already tell a difference. I have learned so much this week about how to help her. As you can see from the picture she is also sporting a pretty Theratog outfit. As crazy as it looks, it really can't be seen under her clothes. She seems to be presenting some sensory issues and this helps. It also keeps her alignment correct. The torticollis is causing her to twist down into the ribcage and she is so straight and snug in her therapy outfit. She wears it all the time and I swear it helps her be a little less feisty.

All the doctors and therapists are concerned about Megan's jaw. It is offset. She was just head down with precious little Justin chillin' on top of her for too long. But, as we have recently learned she technically should have a severely flat head, ears that are uneven, and other complications. but she does not. We already knew she was a miracle and she is now proving to all her medical helpers that she is too. So, we have no doubt that the jaw will straighten as well.

I'm glad that the situation seems so hopeful for Megan. That must be stressful to deal with. How nice that they have the little suits & helmets to help her body realign itself--pretty amazing really. Sending lots of strong body vibes her way!

Poor little Meg, she seems like one tough cookie. How grateful you must be for doctors who caught it in time and can help her. Good luck with everything!

hey jamie, it's darla. I just made a comment and it didn't work for some reason so sorry if it comes up twice. My twins head both needed some help. I would smush them on their sides to sleep everynight with a boppy pillow so their heads would even out. I had to check on them alot because they would wiggle out of it. Then I made them little doughnuts out of cloth diapers so that when they laid on the floor their head wouldn't be touching the floor. It's hard but I just had to be really vigilant about it. Anyway, just some thoughts. darla
